Noted for his passion, precision and intensity, Dominic A. Cheli, 16, continues to embrace and delight his audiences through his deep understanding of the music he performs as well as his technical virtuosity. A student of Ms. Zena Ilyashov, Dominic has advanced to the top positions in piano competitions nationally and internationally. Earlier this month, he placed first in the MTNA Sr. Piano Competition for the state of Missouri and he advances to the Division Level Competition in January, 2010. This past summer, 2009, Dominic enjoyed many productive, exciting musical experiences. He studied with Ms. Yoheved Kaplinsky, the Piano Chair of the Juilliard School, at the Aspen Music Festival and School; he attended the Innsbrook Institute Music Academy and was a Concerto Competition winner; and he studied with Mr. Sergei Babayan at the Cleveland Institute of Music Babayan International Piano Academy. In addition, over the past year and a half, Dominic was chosen to have piano Master Classes with world-renowned concert pianists Mr. Joseph Kalichstein, Ms. Orli Shaham, and earlier this month, Mr. Stephen Hough. Performing with orchestras is also a highlight in Dominic’s musical journey. He has performed Beethoven’s concerto No. 2 in B Flat major with the Gateway Festival Orchestra, the Grieg Piano Concerto with the Webster University Symphony Orchestra, and the Bach Concerto No. 1 in D minor with the St. Louis Chamber Orchestra. Dominic has also been featured on several radio shows - "From the Top", which airs on over 200 radio stations across the nation, Kansas Public Radio and “From the Garden, LIVE!”. He studies music at the Community Music School of Webster University where he also plays chamber music in the Pre-College Music Preparatory Program under its Artistic Director, Ms. Vera Parkin - keyboardist for the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. As a result of his accomplishments, Dominic has received numerous scholarships: the Gregory C. Courtney Scholarship, the Arden and Harry Fisher Scholarship, the National Society of Arts and Letters Scholarship, and the G.A. Buder/Kathryn M. Buder Scholarship. He was first introduced to the piano at age 6 by his father and was inspired by the recordings of great pianists to study seriously. Dominic has been recognized as a Gateway West Young Achiever for his leadership and service in the St. Louis region. He enjoys attending St. Louis Symphony Orchestra concerts, piano master classes, reading and being active. |
